about

The Story of The FMDs
- We were just looking for a way to live a life that was different from our elder generations.

In the small town of Boshan, which was based on factories and mining enterprises, all of the town's construction and development was linked to an enormous industrial complex. The factory compound was composed of the housing which was distributed by the companies, and the replacement of positions among various departments of the companies formed the basis of feelings which were maintained between multiple generations. After the factory closed down and production came to a halt, people's living habits in the compound remained frozen in time. In the midst of a society experiencing rapid development, they turned into a dwindling no man’s land; a perennially unchanged "place of happiness".

For Wang Lei, in the early 1990s, he made a plan to leave the mediocre life of the factory and mine dependents of the Boshan compound. In "They Call it Running Away" and "A Life Different From Their Parents", we hear the collision between young people, who are determined to leave, and their surroundings. Such decisions may seem like a flash of fire, but in reality, they are manifested in breaking away from the original family, and the inevitable result this has on the parent-child bond.

In the process of growing up, we are inevitably faced with the concept of escape time and again. In each instance that we make the decision to leave, our mind becomes more mature, due to a tearing away from the present and a synthesis of the future. When we collide with the worldview of our predecessors, we all experience a stage of “hormonal explosion”; we are destined to refuse to rationally compare the struggles of the previous generation, or try to comprehend any well-intended or rashly given advice. It was only when Wang Lei's father died many years ago, and he became a father himself, that he really began to reflect on the relationship between himself and his father, and began to cherish the memory of those things which he had previously had.

Day after day, year after year. Our present is created by the very things which we cannot tolerate, while the people and events which we fail to comprehend will ultimately predict the collisions of our future. The FMDs can be seen as a prosy elegy of a working class family, which has been seeking reconciliation for half a century.
